Background checks

I'm told that one of the ways ReferAloha.com has been used recently is on background checks to decide between a number of business people to join a networking organization.

It seems in high demand industries where there is a lot of competition for new business (Chiropractors, Insurance, Mortgage, Real Estate, Travel, Investment Advisor, Banking) it is beneficial to look closely at each candidate prior to bringing them on board.

One of the free areas of the ReferAloha.com site (actually it's all free to consumers) is the agency links section. You can go here and click on one of seven different websites to look up background information about a business person. It can be really valuable!

Better Business Bureau

Today I want to talk about the Better Business Bureau. A lot of people never take advantage of this great tool. Basically, you have a professional group of people looking out for you at all times, completely free of charge. You can make a report for a fraudulent business claim, a company oversight, even an unsatisfied customer complaint, and the people at the BBB will send a letter to the owner of the business in question to help resolve your issue.

The benefit they have over you dealing with it yourself is that they have a publicly accessible venue where they publish how many complaints a business has and how well they respond to said complaints. This provides the motivation to get the problem fixed quicker.

Now, let's be realistic...every business has a number of customers that no one would be able to satisfy. It happens to all of us. But the BBB doesn't dock you for people calling in, in fact they will make note when a business has made a reasonable attempt to rectify and the customer doesn't accept. So they understand the pitfalls all too well, no need to worry that they will be overly judgemental.

For the consumer, it pays to be informed. BBB gives you a great tool to do that.

Of course, if you'd rather not spend the time, remember that everyone on our website has been looked up at the BBB and has found to have a satisfactory or above record with them at the time they jumped on board with us. Time and headache saver!

Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii

I've had the pleasure of meeting Jim Tollefson, President & CEO of The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. I was struck by how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares about our business community. Before our meeting I had no idea how much the Chamber did for our local business in Hawaii. They are the watchdog that keeps their eye on the climate, the legislation, outside influences, etc. All of the things we don't really have time for, Jim and his staff keep us informed about.

As a member of this network of businesses, I have found that the people who choose to be members of the Chamber of Commerce seem to be more long-term focused than many I've met who are not. They have a sense that they are part of a larger business community and act accordingly. It's because of this that I use a Chamber of Commerce membership as one of my indicators of a responsible business to be approved as a member of ReferAloha.com. While I don't require it, it certainly helps to move the approval process along so they can begin reaping the benefits of membership as soon as possible!

Welcome to ReferAloha.com

We have a lot going on in the State of Hawaii these days. The world economy is really wreaking havoc on our island lifestyle. With gas prices going up, home prices coming down, and no one really sure what the direction of our politics will be, people are nervous.

One of the reasons we created ReferAloha.com was to give people a place to find local businesses to help them and who have been pre-screened.

Unfortunately, when times get tough, it seems we have more and more people out there who will do anything to make a buck. Whether that means operating without a license, not delivering what was promised, or not following up on complaints, ultimately the customer suffers. We don't begrudge those who are out there working hard to try and put food on the table. We just wanted to create a place where you can find those companies who have maintained a high level of integrity over the years and are willing to stand by their work.

Please join us in supporting these businesses by choosing them here and letting them know you found them on ReferAloha.com!
